So, random_walker, your LiveJournal reveals...

You are... 0% unique and 0% herdlike. When it comes to friends you are lonely. In terms of the way you relate to people, you believe in give and take. Your writing style (based on a recent public entry) is absurdly obscure.

Your overall weirdness is: 65

(The average level of weirdness is: 28.
You are weirder than 93% of other LJers.)

Find out what your weirdness level is!

I think that a scientific organization like APA should offer a service like this, but which is empirically validated with some notion of measurement of error. This is cute and all, but not only is it closed/hidden-source, it is completely undocumented. What is the difference between "interesting" and "peculiar"? I'm just annoyed that this is a popular realm where at least a little bit of scientific method would be worth a bunch, at least to me.

HA! -I was just going to ask what the margin of error was on it.

You should have on option to enter your income to change "weird" to "eccentric."

Remember Audrey? She does this kind of stuff, writing spiders to ensure that the language on webpages is accessible to student readers of various ages. Adding high level value judgments to that can't be too hard. It'd be nice to have a jerkwad litmus test for help forums.

If you follow the link, one of his programs is a form of that, and it gives a snotty value judgment which should look more like this:

"Your writing seems to be mostly complex. Writing for the web is supposed to be concise. Plz to be halping dumb down teh popular discorse. kthxbai! L0L!"

"Mostly Complex" Is that supposed to be two insults, or one?

Also, someone on an internet forum I frequent (I won't say which out of shame) suggested a "stupidity sensor" for almost exactly what you're talking about.

There's also a book recommender on his site; it seems like a nice problem for some hidden variables analysis if you had tons of data. "Do you have Atlas Shrugged because you sincerely like it? For completeness? For lulz? The art deco cover illustration?"

Have you ever read the blurb on "Statistically Improbable Phrases" on Amazon's page? I found it invaluable for finding a decent history book a while back.

I like SIPs, and they came out pretty early.

Note also, that it was a very strong "hint" about the scope of their business at the time: "We have, in fact, OCRed almost our entire inventory and are obviously at least considering doing something New. Enjoy your toy."

Amazon was selling pdfs for a while, and they still have the previews. It wouldn't suprise me if the vendors supply electronic versions, even without the kindl.

Speaking of scans, google books is currently rocking my face off as I look for references for "well known" facts in my thesis.

Yeah, but I thought SIPs came before all that.
