I only mention this because a few years ago I watched RHPS on VH1. They actually pixellated the boobs of the Medusa-ray statues at the end. Presumably exposed plaster cast boobies would have offended the delicate sensibilities of RHPS fans.
Then again, I once attended a high school medley musical with Time Warp as one of the pieces. That was strange. I think RHPS is finally being entrenched as one of those aged edgy remembrances for the establishment to rehash and foist upon the world, with product placements for all. It took a while.

They also played that "David Duchovny, why won't you love me?" song. I hadn't heard it before, so it was funny. Still odd choice, though.
I suppose the explanation might be simple: Maybe they just did market research on their midnight-5am crowd.

I was in Taco Bell at 1:30am in '97 and they played "I put a spell on you" by Screamin' Jay Hawkins. It wasn't near Halloween-season, and its definitely not a lunchtime-crowd choice. It was very well received an heavily discussed by those present, including non-acquaintances at a neighboring table. We all came to a conclusion in accord with yours.

Maybe the remake is just a secondary effect of the writers strike.
