To say nothing of this outspoken designer, what the hell was this "graduate student" thinking? (And what is she studying that requires so little power of discernment?)

Maybe they fantasize about some kind of power over Obama, like a sexual dominance fantasy?

Really, though- If Obama didn't look black, it would seem less of a clear-cut issue of bad choice in clothes. "Bush is my slave" or "Hilary is my slave" doesn't really have the same oomph. "Ralph Nader is my slave".

Possibly more inappropriately appropriate would be "McCain is my slave". You could have a monochrome image of him as a POW, making your Nikes in some sweatshop.

If the shirt was "I am Obama's slave" I doubt many wearers could be expected to be beaten up. Although that hypothetical message is less accurate than the (possibly intended?) theme of politicians serving their constituents.

Still, I cannot imagine anyone buying a shirt of that design on some light-hearted whim and just throwing it on one day without thinking. As little as I give a damn about my appearing in public (though I do dread doing so), I am always conscious of whether I am wearing the shirt which says "ass" on the front. And it is very unlikely I wear certain shirts out during the daylight at all - the ones featuring "bitch" or "fuck" or the "Men Are Sluts - World Tour" shirt.

I general, I feel more people ought to be beaten for the way they dress. Beaten or at least harassed and inconvenienced. Maybe I ought not to continue with elaboration on my opinion.

And as stupid a the shirt design in general seems, someone bought it. So as a design choice, yes, it obviously worked at least in once instance.

I'm betting she was either Lit or English.

In fact, though I doubt we'll ever find out, I bet you 10,000 meat she falls into one of those majors.

I like "I am Obama's slave," or some variation on "Don't let me be Obama's slave." It's a reasonable statement of the doubts of the democratic electorate at this point.

Re: design: in NYC you can sell at least one of anything. If you can't, just make it more expensive.

I'll take your bet, you rogue. I'm thinking she's actually in a vapid semi-professional career-programming path like Communications or some `edgy' Business program; thinly disguised as "graduate school". I think we'll agree that if you actually have neither intellect nor taste, the easiest way to fake it is in corporate art. Although we'll likely never find out.

You know, just after I posted that I thought "communications". Damn it.

See if she's in a student directory, or directory of people awarded BAs from her school. That's usually the most reliable web-source.

She was probably thinking how poignant and witty it was. Loser. She paid fucking $69 for a t-shirt? Girls lucky it was just some teenagers and some spit. That shit could get you _properly_ jumped.

It's surprising the guy didn't list the "two-state solution" on his ass-hat list. This is the most obvious reason why an Israeli would be against Obama. Ironic that proposing to end a genocide could get you called Hitler.
