That's the shittiest defense in an attempt to shift the blame onto RPGs ever.
1. SR is not a LARP and no where do the sourcebooks encourage live play (and with sound reason).
2. Despite 1., I may have belived his defense myself, except that no where in the report does it mention his crazed, unintelligible salish-sidhe speech. If the report had first mentioned "the clerk feared for her life at the `woman's' bizarre speech" before the guy pulled a knife, I would have been on the fence on whether or not he was actually immersed too deeply in LARP.
3. At no time was the clerk ever propositioned for hawt lesbo action. (For resons beyond me, this appears to be a staple of playing a female elf character.)
4. The tranny gamer is never reported as having tried to pay with a credstick. So, even if he was LARPing, he was LARPing robbing a lingerie store.
I'm sure the corporate sheets were full of speculation and accusals the morning after, in the wake of this daring 'run.
But seriously, his defense wasn't that he was LARPing but that he apparently had a complete "break" from reality. It's weird, right? It is probably the simplest explanation for doing such a totally useless crime, but on the other hand, even so it makes less sense than one feels it ought. And a Senior Lab Technician at 45? I wonder what exactly he was doing - sounds it ought be a pretty cushy life.
My favorite part was that he asked for a discount first - it really does seem like exactly the actions of a "wandering" Shadowrun PC, à la the Cluefiles.
Heh. LARP Shadowrun; it would truly be an amusing set of newscasts.
