The use of corn as a biofuel-source of ethanol is somewhat controversial. I am convinced that, purely as a technical ethanol production method, this is an inefficient method. However I am not aware of any criticisms which take into account the full possibilities of this corn protein replacing some petroleum derivatives. Still, it does seem that you can't get very durable or special-use plastics that way - just the cheap stuff for soda bottles and other consumer garbage, so maybe it's not that great anyway.
