bureaucracy

Coincidentally, this started happening after a high-profile (and inconsistently reported) rape occurred on campus. Now, however, it is claimed that it is in fact because "students had complained that the security guard was selectively checking ID cards, suggesting profiling..." Assuming this is true, does anyone have a comment? Certainly it is silly to always check everyone, nonetheless what is required here. Although I really do see the whole "learning while black" thing, universal weak inspection like this is only the `least resistance' solution; it can't be too hard to cons up a piece of plastic passable at 6-foot range, and since it becomes an enforced de facto and politically correct standard, it is wrong to scrutinize anyone more thoroughly than that.
At least it's an unsurprising response. For an other example, the AC is turned low for the evenings for conservation reasons, leaving it muggy and uncomfortable. I suppose that I can see the virtue of this, since we do share the building with soft-subject 9-to-5'ers who are mostly gone by then, although I am sure that the actual virtue at stake is the bottom line, and not the environment. However, during the working day, it is so cold (and non-adjustable) that many people open the windows in their offices (acceptable?) and the lobby (unacceptable), thus letting in the hot (and muggy) air whilst increasing load at peak hours. Whatever.
